Gauging Interest for a New IoT Device Idea
Hi everyone. I'm currently a college student studying Electrical Engineering. I've been an avid consumer tech reader and follower from a young age, and I really like the way the industry is going with consumer tech in the home. That said, I think there are some big concerns, such as privacy and increasing usage of our phones that can be remedied. I've been working on a project on the side that can help with both of these problems while helping to increase productivity.
My idea is a low-cost internet connected display with the main goal of displaying a summary of information in a glance-able way (Weather, tasks, calendar events, news headlines, reddit posts, emails, etc.). Think like in the style of Google Now but with support for more types of data sources, and with the information being organized in one 5-7 in. screen. The device will be designed with privacy (No input devices like microphones or cameras, only maybe a touchscreen) and productivity (Separate from the phone so that it reduces the incentive to get sucked into a screen, and with everything laid out on one screen to save time checking each individual data source) in mind.
I'm mainly doing this project as a learning experience (delving into interfacing with different devices like displays and touchscreens, working with software APIs, and slowly moving to pcb design of an embedded system using commercially available chips), but I was also curious if there was any interest in it on a consumer level.
Tl;Dr: Trying to gauge interest in a low-cost smart display that summarizes info from a variety of sources with an emphasis on privacy and reducing time spent on phones
I want to know what you guys think about the idea. Is it dumb/already been done before, or are there things that can be improved/focused on more? I've thought about more of the feature set besides what I've said here, so if you have any more questions let me know.
Thanks!
