What happened to Gooey?

I remember back in the early 2000s there was this cool little chat app that would identify other users looking at the same webpage as you and create a little mini-chatroom for you all (it's just taken me ages to remember it was called 'Gooey'). I remember it being pretty fun and useful. Does anyone know what happened to it? All I can find are articles from 2002 saying the developer, Hypernix, was having financial troubles and was bought by another company, Siga.

I've not heard of either, but even if the latter tanked as well taking the app with it, where did the idea go? For those unfamiliar, it worked a bit like a chatroom version of Reddit: if you and ten other users were all reading the same online article at the same time, for e.g., you could could instant message other users and talk about it. I'd still use that, so it seems odd that the idea fizzled out.
