Messenger is being weird

So when I’m texting my friend it doesn’t show that he’s active but sometimes I’ll get on and it’ll say he was active a few hours even though every time I text him it doesn’t show his activity status also I’m pretty sure he doesn’t have my messages muted or anything because every time I text him it goes through.
